Special relationship with the Netherlands
The Netherlands also has a special historical relationship with the Mohawk. They are united in 6 nations with other neighboring tribes, indigenous communities that until recently were called Iroquois which means as much as “snakes eaters”. A French name once given by the French Explorer and colony founder Champlain who founded around 1600 New-France in Canada. Today, they have taken his own name back in the name, difficult to pronounce for a westerling: Haudenosaunee.

The Dutch Consul General of New York City, Rob de Vos, receives the Haudenosaunee Indians in New York City in 2013 during the Indian two Row commemoration – the covenant that the Indians made 400 years earlier (§1613) with the Dutch. He honors the covenant, and thanks them for the help they offer. This made it possible to create the Dutch colony in North America, New Netherlands (in 1614) and various trading posts. The trade items were used to trade fur with the Indians. One of these trading posts was Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, the current New York City on the island of Manhattan. This area was given on loan and not as many people think ‘bought’ for a few beads and mirrors.

A short report on the two Row Wampum Belt Campaign with an explanation of the campaign and the commemoration of the covenant between the North American Indians in the Hudson Valley, and the Dutch merchants. 1613 was a historic moment. A covenant with the Indians enabled the Netherlands to establish a colony in North America between New England and New Francia. The colony was called New Netherlands. Partly thanks to the covenant, the Dutch Legacy in North America was able to flourish even after the hostile English acquisition of New Netherlands in 1664. With the foundation, the Netherlands has a unique relationship with America to date.
